Egg freezing, also referred to as oocyte cryopreservation, is a specialized technique within assisted reproductive technologies (ART) designed to preserve a woman’s fertility. This process begins with the administration of medications that stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once these eggs have matured, they are retrieved from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure. The retrieved eggs are then frozen and stored for future use.
In the future, when you are ready to attempt pregnancy, these frozen eggs can be thawed and combined with sperm through in vitro fertilization (IVF) to create embryos. These embryos are then prepared for transfer into the uterus during a subsequent embryo transfer cycle, aiming to achieve pregnancy.
Embryo freezing, while similar in principle, involves a slightly different process. Instead of freezing individual eggs, embryos are created through IVF and then frozen for later use. After the eggs have been fertilized with sperm in the laboratory, the resulting embryos are preserved through cryopreservation. These frozen embryos can be stored and later thawed when you decide to pursue pregnancy. The thawed embryos are then transferred into the uterus in a procedure designed to facilitate implantation and achieve a successful pregnancy.
Both egg and embryo freezing offer valuable options for preserving fertility and planning family expansion at a more convenient time. These procedures are commonly performed at our affiliated centers, ensuring that you receive expert care and support throughout the process..
